Dry eyes can cause a vast array of symptoms such as:
- A stinging, burning or scratchy sensation in your eyes.
- Blurry Vision
- Sensitivity to light.
- Eye redness.
- A sensation of having something in your eyes.
- Difficulty wearing contact lenses.
- Difficulty with nighttime driving.
- Watery eyes, which is the body's response to the irritation of dry eyes.
Often, dry eye is caused by blocked glands that excrete the oily outer layer part of the tears. A blockage of these meibomian glands can cause insufficiencies in tear film thickness and tear instability, causing the tears to break apart when they shouldn’t.
This results in inflammation on the surface of the eye which can be triggered by a variety of factors such as:
- Aging
- Dry, dusty or windy climate
- Insufficient blinking (such as when you’re staring
at a computer screen) - Long-term contact lens wear
- Medication side effects
- Eye surgery
