What is Diabetic Retinopathy?

It is a complication of diabetes and a leading cause of blindness. It occurs when diabetes damages the tiny blood vessels inside the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.

The eye is the only place in the body where blood vessels can be observed in their normal state. Often times diseases like diabetes and hypertension can be detected during an eye exam even before the diagnosis from a medical doctor.
