Can a Sinus Infection Affect Your Eyes? When to Seek Care

Sinus infections are common, especially during colder months, but many people are surprised to learn that sinus problems can sometimes affect the eyes, too.

If you’ve ever had sinus pressure along with eye discomfort, you’re not imagining things.

How Sinuses and Eyes Are Connected

Your sinuses are air-filled spaces located behind your forehead, cheeks, and nose, very close to your eyes. When the sinuses become inflamed or infected, the pressure and congestion can affect nearby structures, including the eye area.

Eye Symptoms Linked to Sinus Infections

A sinus infection may cause:

  • Pressure or pain around the eyes

  • Headaches behind or around the eyes

  • Puffy or swollen eyelids

  • Watery eyes

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Mild blurry vision due to pressure or watering

These symptoms are usually temporary and improve as the sinus infection clears.

When It Could Be More Serious

In rare cases, a sinus infection can spread to tissues around the eye, leading to a more serious condition that requires immediate medical attention.

Seek urgent care if you notice:

  • Severe swelling or redness around one eye

  • Eye pain, especially when moving your eye

  • Double vision

  • Vision changes or decreased vision

  • Fever along with eye swelling

  • Difficulty moving the eye

These symptoms could indicate an infection in the tissues around the eye and should be evaluated right away.

What You Can Do at Home

For mild sinus-related eye discomfort, you can try:

  • Rest and staying hydrated

  • Warm compresses over the sinus areas

  • Using a humidifier

  • Following your primary care provider’s recommendations for sinus relief

If your eye symptoms feel unusual, worsen, or don’t improve as your sinus symptoms resolve, it’s a good idea to have your eyes checked.

When to See Your Eye Doctor

Even if the cause is sinus-related, persistent eye pressure, pain, or vision changes should never be ignored. An eye exam can help rule out other issues such as dry eye, eye strain, or infection.

The doctors at Lentz Eye Care are here to help determine whether your symptoms are sinus-related or coming from the eyes themselves, and guide you toward the right care.

If your eyes feel off, trust your instincts and schedule an appointment at any of our Lentz locations. Your comfort and vision matter.
