If your eyes often feel gritty, itchy, or overly watery, you might be experiencing dry eye syndrome, a common and treatable condition. Whether it’s from screen time, windy weather, or underlying health issues, dry eyes can affect your comfort and vision throughout the day.
Here are a few helpful tips from our eye doctors at our Wichita (East and West) and Newton locations to help soothe and prevent dry eye symptoms.
1. Use Artificial Tears Regularly
Over-the-counter lubricating drops (not “redness relief” drops) can provide instant moisture. Keep a bottle in your bag, desk, or car. If you're using them more than 4 times a day, ask your optometrist which preservative-free option is best.
2. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule
Staring at screens reduces how often you blink, which dries out your eyes. Give your eyes a break every 20 minutes by looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
3. Stay Hydrated
Dehydration can make dry eyes worse. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body, and eyes, well hydrated.
4. Try a Humidifier
If your home or office is dry, using a humidifier can help maintain moisture in the air and ease dry eye symptoms.
5. Wear Sunglasses Outdoors
Wind and sun can quickly irritate dry eyes. Wraparound sunglasses help block wind and UV rays while keeping moisture in.
6. Apply Warm Compresses
Using a warm, damp washcloth on your eyes for 5–10 minutes can help loosen clogged oil glands in your eyelids and improve tear quality.
7. Avoid Smoke and Harsh Environments
Cigarette smoke, dusty air, and strong wind can trigger dry eye symptoms. Try to avoid these conditions or wear protective eyewear when possible.
8. Schedule a Dry Eye Evaluation
If over-the-counter drops aren’t helping, it’s time to see your optometrist. You may need prescription treatment, specialized drops, or in-office therapy to restore comfort and tear production.
