Low Vision Awareness Month: Understanding and Managing Vision Loss

February is Low Vision Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with low vision and to provide resources and support for those affected.

At Lentz Eye Care, it's important to us to understand what low vision is and how it differs from regular vision impairment, as well as the steps that can be taken to manage and improve the quality of life for those with low vision.

What is Low Vision?

Low vision refers to significant visual impairment that cannot be corrected with regular glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. It is not the same as blindness, but it can severely impact daily activities such as reading, driving, or recognizing faces. Common causes of low vision include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and retinal diseases.

Signs of Low Vision

If you or a loved one is experiencing any of the following symptoms, it might be time to consult an eye care professional:

  • Difficulty seeing even with glasses or contacts

  • Blurry or distorted vision

  • Trouble reading or seeing faces clearly

  • Poor night vision

  • A decrease in color contrast perception

How Can Low Vision Be Managed?

Although low vision can’t be fully corrected, there are various ways to help individuals adapt and improve their quality of life:

  1. Low Vision Aids: Specially designed magnifiers, talking watches, and electronic devices can assist with tasks such as reading and writing.

  2. Vision Therapy: Some patients benefit from specific exercises or therapies aimed at improving remaining vision and eye coordination.

  3. Environmental Modifications: Simple changes in the home or workspace, such as increased lighting or contrast-enhancing tools, can help individuals with low vision perform daily tasks more easily.

  4. Regular Eye Exams: Ongoing eye care is essential to monitor and manage conditions that may contribute to or worsen low vision.

Why Low Vision Awareness Matters

By increasing awareness, we can help reduce the stigma surrounding low vision and empower those affected to seek support and guidance. It's crucial to offer a compassionate approach to individuals dealing with visual impairments and ensure they have access to resources that can make a positive impact on their lives.
