Simple Guide | How To Clean Your Contact Lens Case

If you wear contact lenses, your lens case is just as important as the lenses themselves. A clean contact lens case helps keep your lenses free from harmful bacteria and prevents eye infections. Proper care takes only a few minutes but can make a big difference in protecting your eye health.

If you have any questions about your eye health or eye care, contact Lentz Eye Care or visit one of our three locations in Wichita and Newton, Kansas.

Here’s a simple guide to correctly clean and maintain your contact lens case:

Why Cleaning Your Lens Case Matters

Contact lens cases can become breeding grounds for bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms if not cleaned regularly. Dirty cases can lead to serious eye infections like keratitis or conjunctivitis. Proper cleaning reduces the risk and ensures your lenses stay safe to wear.

Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Your Contact Lens Case

  1. Empty the Case Daily
After inserting your lenses, pour out any leftover solution from the case. Never reuse old solution, it won’t be effective at disinfecting.

  2. Rinse with Fresh Solution
Rinse the case with fresh contact lens solution. Avoid using tap water, as it may contain bacteria and impurities that can harm your eyes.

  3. Gently Rub and Dry
Using clean fingers, rub the inside of the case with fresh solution to remove any residue. Then, allow the case to air dry completely. Turn it upside down on a clean tissue or paper towel to prevent dust from settling inside.

  4. Avoid Household Cleaners
Never use soap, bleach, or other household cleaners to clean your lens case. These substances can leave harmful residues that may irritate your eyes.

  5. Replace Your Case Regularly
The American Optometric Association recommends replacing your contact lens case every three months, or sooner if it becomes cracked or discolored.

Signs It’s Time for a New Lens Case

Even with regular cleaning, cases can wear out over time. Replace your lens case immediately if you notice any of the following:

  • A slimy or sticky texture inside the case

  • Cracks, scratches, or visible wear

  • Persistent odors or discoloration
