What Causes Floaters in Eyes?

If you notice small dark spots or squiggly lines that drift through your vision on occasion you might wonder if these are dangerous. They might appear when you’re looking at something very bright and might be more apparent at certain times of the day. If you have these shadows crossing your vision, it’s always important to let your optometrist know so that they can examine you for any vision or health changes.

What Causes Floaters in Eyes?

In many cases floaters can be caused as collagen fibers form clumps in your vitreous (the gel-like fluid that fills your eye), a common occurrence as people age. They will continue to move as your eyes move, meaning when you try to look directly at them they’ll escape your vision. Often blinking and moving your eyes can move them out of your line of vision if they are distracting. As you get used to seeing them, your brain will begin to ignore them.

Serious Causes Of Floaters in Eyes

Sometimes, floaters can be caused by more serious issues, such as:

  • Eye infection
  • Eye injury
  • Inflammation of the eye (uveitis)
  • Retinal tear/detachment

When Should I Contact an Optometrist About Floaters or Changes In Vision?

If floaters are newly onset you should contact your optometrist immediately to avoid long-term vision problems. In particular, contact your optometrist immediately if you notice:

  • A sudden increase in the amount of floaters you see
  • Loss of vision/impaired vision
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye pain
  • Flashing lights
