Understanding The Different Types Of Contact Lenses

Many people are familiar with the traditional eyeglasses, but what about contact lenses? Compared to all the different frame styles and lens shapes of glasses, it might seem like contact lenses are much simpler. However, there are actually many different types of contact lenses too, varying in shape, durability, and material. In this blog post, we will break down these differences and help you find the right lenses for you.

Spherical Lenses vs Toric Lenses
The first factor to consider when choosing a contact lens is whether it is spherical or toric. Spherical lenses are designed to be equally curved in all directions while toric lenses have two curves—one that is more curved than the other—that create a cylinder shape. Spherical lenses are suitable for correcting near-sightedness or far-sightedness while toric lenses can also correct astigmatism by providing a more accurate fit on the eye.

Daily Disposable Vs Reusable Lenses
Another key consideration when purchasing contacts is whether you want reusable or disposable lenses. Daily disposable lenses offer convenience since they only need to be worn once before being discarded; however, they can be more expensive than reusable options if worn frequently. On the other hand, reusable contacts may require more maintenance but can save money in the long run if worn consistently over a period of time.

Soft Vs Hard Lenses
The type of material used for contact lenses is another important factor to consider when selecting which option is best for you. Soft lenses are made from flexible plastics that allow oxygen to pass through them so they do not dry out your eyes as easily as hard contacts do; however, soft contacts can be more prone to damage and require frequent replacement due to daily wear and tear. Hard contacts meanwhile offer improved vision correction but lack flexibility and may cause discomfort if worn for extended periods of time.
As you can see, there is much more involved with selecting contact lenses than meets the eye! It’s important to take into account factors such as which type of lens (spherical vs toric), how often it needs replacing (daily disposables vs reusable) and even the material (soft vs hard). At Metric Marketing Optometry we understand how difficult it can be to make this decision on your own so our experienced optometrists will take all of these variables into account when finding the right pair of contact lenses for you!
