Caring for Eye Health As We Age

As we age, our eyesight can change in a variety of ways. These changes may be minor and cause little to no disruption in our day-to-day lives. However, some of the changes that come with age can pose more serious problems, such as sight-threatening conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration. Fortunately, there are proactive steps we can take now to ensure our eyes remain healthy as we grow older.

Regular Eye Exams Are Key
The most important tool in looking after our eye health is early diagnosis. That's why it's so important to get regular eye exams by an optometrist or ophthalmologist—ideally at least once a year or more often if recommended by your doctor. During these exams, your doctor will check your vision and look for signs of any eye diseases or conditions that need to be treated early on.
Beyond getting regular eye exams, there are other easy things we can do at home to look after our eye health. Eating a balanced diet rich in nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins A, C and E is essential for good vision health over time. Additionally, wearing sunglasses when you go outside is a great way to protect your eyes from the sun’s UV rays. Other tips include avoiding smoking (or quitting if you already smoke) and taking regular breaks from screens throughout the day (for instance, following the 20-20-20 rule).

Looking after our eyesight should not be taken lightly—especially as we get older. With annual eye exams and at home care tips like - eating a balanced diet and wearing sunglasses while outdoors - we can help keep our eyes healthy as we age.
