A Guide to the Most Eye-Healthy Foods?

Eating a healthy diet is essential for overall health and well-being, but it's especially important to pay attention to nutrition when it comes to keeping your eyes healthy. Your eyes can benefit from certain vitamins and minerals, so incorporating some of these foods into your meals can help protect your vision now and in the future. Let’s take a look at some of the best foods for eye health.

Carrots
Carrots are often thought of as being a “superfood” for eyes, but this isn’t actually true. While carrots do contain beta-carotene, which helps keep our retinas healthy, there are other yellow and orange leafy greens and vegetables that have more beta-carotene than carrots. Sweet potatoes, squash, pumpkin, bell peppers, oranges—these are all great sources of beta-carotene too.

Eggs and Leafy Greens
Leafy greens like kale and spinach contain lutein and zeaxanthin—two antioxidants that help keep the macula (the part of the eye responsible for sharp central vision) healthy. Egg yolks are also an excellent source of lutein due to their high concentration of carotenoids. So instead of just having egg whites in your omelet or scrambled eggs, make sure you add both the egg yolk and some leafy greens!

Oysters and Fish
Omega-3 fatty acids are also important for eye health because they help reduce inflammation in the body. Oysters are rich in zinc, which is essential for good brain function and immune system health; while fish like salmon, sardines, herring, tuna are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that can help protect against age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Multivitamins & Supplements
If you’re not getting enough nutrients from food alone, taking a multivitamin or supplement may be beneficial. Make sure to talk with your doctor about what supplements would be best for you since everyone has different nutritional needs!

And don't forget — no matter how good your diet is — you should still get regular comprehensive eye exams every year! That way any problems with your vision can be diagnosed early on so you can take steps to prevent further damage.
