Firework Safety and Fourth of July Fun

Independence Day is a time for celebration, barbecues, fireworks displays, and spending time with friends and family. While fireworks can create a beautiful display in the sky, they can also be dangerous if proper safety precautions aren’t taken. Let’s take a look at some of the risks associated with fireworks and how you can make sure your 4th of July celebrations are fun – and safe!

The Dangers Inherent in Fireworks
Fireworks contain combustible materials that burn quickly to create dazzling effects. Unfortunately, this also means that they can be hazardous to those who are not careful. Injuries caused by mishandling fireworks include burns, blindness, hearing loss, disfigurement, or even death. It is important to remember that fireworks should only be used by adults under close supervision of someone who knows how to handle them safely.

Tips for Fireworks Safety
If you plan on using fireworks this 4th of July holiday, it is essential that you follow all safety protocols suggested by your local fire department or other authorities. These may include staying away from dry grass or other flammable objects; having buckets of water nearby; wearing protective eyewear; keeping pets inside; lighting only one firework at a time; and never relighting a “dud” firework. Always read instructions carefully before setting off any type of firework and make sure you know what to do if an accident occurs.

What to Do If an Accident Happens
In case of emergency due to a firework-related injury or accident: call 911 immediately for medical help; contact Lentz Eye Care if eye injuries occur; thoroughly wash affected area with soap and cool water; apply cold compresses on the affected area (not ice); avoid taking aspirin and ibuprofen as they can increase bleeding. Depending on the severity of the injury, you may need to seek emergency medical attention right away - don't hesitate to do so if needed!
