Macular Pigment Optical Density and Its Benefits

February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Low Vision Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to learn about how you can provide your eyes with the best protection. Lentz Eyecare is one of the few practices in the Wichita area that offer Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD) testing, which measures the amount of macular pigment in your eyes. This test not only helps protect your eyes from harmful blue light but also confirms that Eye Promise® supplementation is working for you!

What Is MPOD?
Macular pigment optical density (MPOD) testing measures the amount of macular pigment found in your eyes to help protect them from harmful blue light. It uses a device called QuantifEye MPS to determine the amount of macular pigment present in each eye. The result of this test provides valuable information on how much protection against blue light your eyes have and whether or not further supplementation is needed.

How Does It Work?
QuantifEye MPS utilizes an easy, non-invasive procedure that takes less than a minute per eye to complete. It works by measuring how much light passes through your central retina when looking at a specific color pattern while wearing special glasses. The glasses filter out all colors except for blue light, so any absorption detected by this test will be due to macular pigment alone. This test has been scientifically validated and has been used on more than 3 million eyes! Plus, only one eye needs tested – no need for both!

What Are The Benefits?
The benefits of MPOD testing go beyond just protecting your eyes from harmful blue light. Not only does it accurately and reliably identify which patients need supplements to help reduce their risk of AMD, but it also confirms that Eye Promise® supplementation is working! Thanks to its repeatable nature, you can take this test as many times as necessary to make sure that your Eyes are receiving adequate protection from harmful blue light exposure.
