Helping Your Child Adjust to Wearing Glasses

Getting new glasses can be hard for any child. They may feel insecure or ashamed, and in turn, not want to wear them. But with the right approach and support from parents, children can learn to love their glasses! Here are some tips for parents on how to help children adjust to wearing glasses.

Make It Fun!
Glasses don’t have to be boring! Encourage your child’s creativity by allowing them to pick out frames they like best–even if that means going a bit wild with color or shape. Letting your child choose their own frames will make them more excited and willing to wear them. Our Vision Source® members don't mind fashion shows in their practices either! Most importantly, remind your child that wearing glasses is something special; it’s a sign of intelligence and maturity.

Set A Good Example
It’s important for you as a parent to set an example when it comes to wearing glasses. Show your kids that you too are proud of your frames by wearing yours with confidence every day. This can really help kids feel better about wearing their own glasses—seeing you wear yours can help them normalize the idea of spectacles as something special rather than something embarrassing or strange. After all, “like mother, like daughter” applies here too!

Be Patient
Your child may need time to get used to their new eyewear before they become comfortable with the idea of wearing it every day. Don't rush things—allow your child the space they need until they're ready for full-time eyeglass use. If necessary, start by encouraging part-time wear—perhaps just during school hours at first—and gradually transition into all-day wear once they've adjusted properly.

Helping children adjust properly and love their glasses is essential for proper vision health and development throughout childhood years and beyond! With the right approach and support from parents, kids soon come around and become proud wearers of spectacles!
