Understanding and Addressing Computer Vision Syndrome

Computer Vision Syndrome, also referred to as Digital Eye Strain, is a group of eye and vision-related problems resulting from prolonged computer, tablet, e-reader and cell phone use. With the average American worker spending seven hours per day on the computer either in the office or working from home – it’s becoming more and more important to understand how we can prevent Digital Eye Strain. Let’s take a look at what causes this syndrome and some tips for prevention.

What Causes Computer Vision Syndrome?
Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) occurs when your eyes become strained from staring at a digital screen for an extended period of time. This strain can cause symptoms such as headaches, dry eyes, blurred vision, neck pain, fatigue and difficulty focusing. The reason CVS is so common is because most people spend hours every day looking at screens that emit blue light which can be harmful to our eyes over time. Other factors such as glare on the screen, low screen contrast or incorrect viewing distances add to the strain on our eyes.

Prevention Tips
The best way to prevent CVS is through regular breaks away from your digital device. Taking regular breaks helps give your eyes a chance to rest and recover from all of that blue light exposure. To make sure you’re taking enough breaks throughout the day you can use timer apps or reminders throughout your workday – try setting a goal for yourself to take even just one break for every hour you spend in front of the computer! Additionally, following the 20-20-20 rule can help minimize your chances of developing CVS: Every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds! This will not only help reduce eyestrain but also improve focus levels during tasks like studying or working remotely.
