Your Eyes in the Winter: Invest in Snow Goggles!

The winter season is upon us, and while there are fewer hours of daylight to enjoy, sunglasses are still incredibly important. Even though you may be surrounded by snow and not sand, ultraviolet (UV) rays can still cause damage to your eyes. At Lentz Eye Care, we want all of our patients to have a great winter full of their favorite outdoor and indoor activities, so we strongly encourage you to invest in a good pair of snow goggles.

The Dangers of Snow Blindness
Snow blindness can happen even if you’re wearing regular sunglasses or no eye protection at all. UV rays can do just as much harm on a snowy mountain slope as they can at the beach. While our skin is protected by layers and layers of snow gear, our eyes are still vulnerable if we aren’t being careful about eye protection. Symptoms of snow blindness include burning and pain in the eyes, a sensation like something is stuck in them, light sensitivity, swollen eyelids, blurred vision, watery eyes, headaches, and exaggerated glare around lights when indoors. To prevent this from happening to you or your family members this winter season, it’s important that everyone wears UV-blocking snow goggles while enjoying any outdoor activities like skiing or snowshoeing.

Watch out for Reflections & Glare
In addition to blocking UV rays from the sun itself, it’s also important to keep an eye out for reflections and glare off the surrounding white terrain. The sun’s reflection off the clouds is up to 80-percent brighter than direct sunlight; therefore it’s very beneficial to wear sunglasses that have polarization lenses as well as UV protection while engaging in outdoor winter sports. Polarized lenses help reduce glare from reflective surfaces such as snow or ice so that you can see more clearly without squinting or straining your eyes too much.

Invest in Good Quality Sunglasses & Goggles
It's always best to invest in good quality sunglasses with 100% UVA/UVB protection for any time spent outdoors — not just. during the winter months — but especially for activities near reflective surfaces like ice and snow where extra glare protection is needed! A great pair of polarized ski/snowboard goggles will provide both 100% UVA/UVB protection plus anti-fog lens coating so that your vision won't be impaired by fogging up when you take them off between runs!

Thankfully there are plenty of options available when it comes to choosing a pair of protective eyewear for outdoor winter activities such as skiing and snowboarding! Quality matters when it comes to protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays and annoying glare off reflective surfaces like ice and snow - so make sure you invest in a good pair of polarized ski/snowboard goggles before venturing out this winter season! By investing in quality eyewear now you'll be able to safely enjoy all your favorite cold-weather activities without worrying about damaging your eyesight!
