Understanding the Risk Factors of Macular Degeneration

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a common eye condition that affects millions of people around the world. It is the leading cause of severe vision loss in adults over the age of 50, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 1.8 million people have AMD and another 7.3 million are at substantial risk for vision loss. In order to prevent further vision loss due to AMD, it is important to understand its risk factors and how to proactively protect your eyes from it.

What Causes AMD?
The exact cause of AMD is unknown, but there are several risk factors associated with it. Age is one of the main risk factors for developing AMD; as you get older, your risk increases significantly. Other genetic or lifestyle factors that can increase your risk include smoking, obesity, and a high-fat diet. Some studies have also found a correlation between excessive exposure to UV rays and developing AMD in later life.

How Can I Proactively Protect My Eyes?
At Lentz Eye Care & Associates, our primary focus is always early detection of diseases and proactively prescribing products to delay or completely eliminate the natural progression of eye diseases and vision loss, including macular degeneration detection and prevention. Our proactive approach includes using Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD) technology which can be used to measure levels of macular pigment in the eye—the pigment responsible for protecting against light damage—and prescribe specific nutritional supplements tailored specifically to each individual’s needs based on their MPOD measurements. We are also one of only a few practices offering comprehensive treatment plan for AMD patients
