Halloween Safety Tips for Kids from Lentz Eye Care

Halloween is right around the corner! With all of the fun and excitement, it’s important to make sure your kids stay safe. Every year, hundreds of eye injuries related to costumes and masks are treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms. Let's break down a few tips on how to keep your kids safe while they enjoy this spooky holiday!

Costumes and Safety
When shopping for costumes, look out for loose-fitting fabrics that won’t block your child’s vision or cause them to trip and fall. Make sure any accessories such as swords or wands are soft, lightweight, and flexible. Props like these can increase the risk of accidental eye injury if used improperly. It’s also important to consider any allergies your child may have when buying or making their costume; make sure any decorations or materials you use don’t contain latex if they have an allergy to it.

Masks and Accessories
If your child plans on wearing a mask for their costume, make sure it fits snugly but not too tightly so that their eyesight isn’t impaired. To ensure maximum visibility, avoid using decorative contact lenses – these can be dangerous if not fitted properly by an eyecare professional! If they plan on using face paint instead of a mask, opt for hypoallergenic brands that are free from formaldehyde, mercury, and other potentially toxic chemicals.

Trick-or-Treating Tips
It’s important to remember that trick-or-treating often happens at night so having reflective tape incorporated into your child’s costume can help ensure they remain visible while they go door-to-door collecting candy. It's also a good idea to provide them with a flashlight so they can clearly see where they're going - especially when crossing streets or walking up steps - and so drivers can easily spot them from afar.

With these tips in mind, you can rest assured knowing you've done everything you possibly can to keep your children safe during this spooky season!
