Tips for a Safe and Fun Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner, and that means costumes, candy, and fun! But before you let your kids hit the streets and start trick-or-treating, make sure they’re aware of some important safety tips. Every year, hundreds of eye injuries related to costumes and masks are treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms; don’t let your child be one of them! Here’s what you need to know for a safe and happy Halloween.

Costumes and Safety
When your child is selecting their costume, it can be easy to get carried away with all the different options available. Make sure that their costume fits properly so that they don’t trip over it while walking or running around. Avoid loose clothing that can get caught in doors or on branches while they are out at night. Additionally, avoid oversized shoes or long skirts that can cause them to trip or fall down stairs; it’s best to stick with comfortable sneakers instead. If your child will be wearing a mask, make sure that it fits correctly so as not to obstruct their vision.

Trick-or-Treating Tips
It’s important to plan ahead when trick-or-treating with children; having an idea of where you will be going and how long you plan on being out is key. Make sure your kids are visible by providing reflective tape for them to wear on their costumes or carrying glow sticks or flashlights with them as they go door-to-door for candy. Additionally, remind them not to enter any houses without your permission; most people will offer candy from the doorstep instead of inviting trick-or-treaters inside their homes. Keeping an eye on where everyone goes is also essential; if possible, have an adult accompany each group of children while they collect candy from each house.

Candy Safety
We all know how tempting it may be for children (and adults!) alike to sample the loot before making it home safely… but this isn’t always a great idea! Before letting anyone eat any treats collected during trick-or-treating, inspect all candy thoroughly for anything suspicious like open packages or homemade treats from people you do not know well—it might be best just to discard those items altogether rather than taking a chance with eating them! Finally, if possible try sorting through the candy before bedtime so that any unsafe items can be removed before your little ones drift off into dreamland!
